Schedule

Mykki Blanco

Mykki Blanco, the artist persona and stage name of Michael David Quattlebaum Jr., is an internationally renowned musician, performing artist, and LGBTQ+ activist.

While their self-titled debut Mykki album wasn’t released until 2016, they were the creative force behind mixtapes such as Cosmic Angel (2012) and Gay Dog Food (2013); these groundbreaking mixtapes along with Blanoc’s other early releases defined the “queer rap” genre and paved the way for the possibility other non-heteronormative and gender-nonconfirming artists to break through. Blanco has created cult classic hits including ”Kingpinning” and “Haze.Boogie.Life” and “Wavvy” and ”Coke White, Starlight” and ”The Initiation”— and they have set an extremely high bar when it comes to music videos lead single “High School Never Ends” from their debut album was directed by Matt Lambert and won multiple awards on the festival circuit.

Bag Raiders

Australian dance royalty Bag Raiders have been stalwarts in the electronic music community for more than a decade. After releasing a slew of cult underground cuts including ‘Fun Punch’ and ‘Turbo Love’, Jack Glass and Chris Stracey signed to dance-powerhouse Modular Records and released their debut self-titled album in 2010. With that, the game changed forever. The record debuted at #7 on the official ARIA album chart, snagging nominations for ‘Best Dance Release’ (ARIA), ‘Album of the Year’ (Triple J Award) and ‘Dance Work of the Year’ (APRA). The LP featured the smash hit singles ‘Way Back Home’, ‘Sunlight’, ‘Snake Charmer’ and of course festival anthem ‘Shooting Stars’ – which has gone onto become one of the biggest Australian dance tracks of all-time. ‘Shooting Stars’ has now amassed over 4 billion online streams, achieving 32 Platinum and 7 Gold plaques worldwide and delivering a cultural impact beyond anyone’s wildest expectations. Since its release the song has taken on a life of its own, breaking-the-internet a gazillion times through a series of iconic ‘Shooting Stars memes’.

It’s impossible to over-emphasise the impact that Bag Raiders have had on dance music, both in Australia and across the planet. With such a rich history of achievement already in the bank, one could forgive the duo for resting on their laurels and setting off into the sun. Luckily for us, they’ve never been hungrier, more creative nor more excited about what comes next… which is what exactly? “More bangers, more head breaking” spouts Jack.

GoldFish

Before changing the Electronic Music game in South Africa as GoldFish, Dominic Peters and David Poole were mild-mannered students by day that blew the roof off house parties by night. Their trail blazing live show, which mixed tireless house beats with multiple live instrumental performances earned the attention of a swelling house and electronic music fan base.As their fame grew, so did their scope, scouring obscure sources for unique and cheeky samples that they twisted into endlessly fun hooks and choruses. Stirring African rhythms and Sax melodies into the mix helped Goldfish evolve a truly unique house sound.Their burnished grooves are rooted in pure pop pleasure, hooking even the most cautious listener onto the dance floor (without next-day regret). After seven years basing themselves between Cape Town and Ibiza, Dom and Dave have settled in San Diego to concentrate on the burgeoning US Market. A consistent string of chart-topping hits—and a live show that has seen countless festival appearances from Coachella to Glastonbury—has helped GoldFish become one of the most enduring and influential groups in live electronic music.

Babe Rainbow & LA LOM @ Union Square x The Chapel

SF Live is a six-month series of free, outdoor music concerts put on as a joint, citywide initiative by esteemed San Francisco arts & music producers Illuminate, San Francisco Parks Alliance, Noise Pop Productions, and Union Square Alliance. Created as a love letter to San Francisco music, SF Live concerts are a coming together of San Francisco’s storied musical history and the city’s promising and developing local talent.

Schedule TBA!

Meet the Artists:

Babe Rainbow

Babe Rainbow are Biblical, magical, they conjure up emotion, sincerity, classic modern music. Cool breeze with his long blonde hair saying: ‘We want to tell people what we are about and let them know that we understand what they are about.’

‘Fresh As A Head of Lettuce’ takes their love for the experimental folkies and spaced out summer psychedelia but speeded up, mawkish, in exotic vamp, up and down the stage at the same time switching halfway into fast rock.

Opening with this very slow meaningful love song ‘Super Ego’, it is followed by the feel good raver ‘Sunshine’: an upbeat jungle toucher with the bands main ingredients. It’s the next two songs ‘Paradise Garage’ and ‘Quicksilver’ that pull away from box tricks under the influence of producer Timon Martin and Jorge Elbrecht mixing.

Both songs are jungle music really, an asylum for emotional imbeciles, beat music, big, open, fun, vintage, original rock brought together by the babe rainbow gift for the obvious.

LA LOM

The Los Angeles League of Musicians, LA LOM, are an instrumental trio formed in Los Angeles in 2021. They blend the sounds of Cumbia Sonidera, 60’s soul ballads and classic romantic boleros that emanate from radios, backyard parties and dance clubs of Los Angeles with the twang of Peruvian Chicha and Bakersfield Country.

Minami Deutsch

Minami Deutsch/南ドイツ was formed by Kyotaro Miula (guitar, vocals, synthesizer) in Tokyo in 2014. The band members being self-professed “repetition freaks” who heavily listen to minimal techno.

Boogarins

Boogarins’ Fernando “Dino” Almeida and Benke Ferraz began playing music together as teenagers in the central Brazilian city of Goiânia– recording psychedelic pop in their parents’ gardens, filtering their country’s rich musical history through a very modern lens.

’Manual’ has the same dual meanings in Portuguese and English: “to work with your hands” and “an instruction book.” With the full title being Manual, ou guia livre de dissolução dos sonhos (Manual, or free guide to the dissolution of dreams), the album should more so be viewed as a sort of diary or dream journal. The artwork, by artist Nei Caetano da Silva (taken from a sketchbook in which he used to draw with his children), perfectly represents the mood of the music: deeply personal, emotional, free-flowing and in the moment, tying together thoughts and dreams. Reflecting on Boogarins’ epic journey over the last few years, during album centerpiece “Falsa Folha de Rosto” Dino sings, “viver virou sonhar” (living became dreaming). Yes, Boogarins’ new LP does indeed offer a free ride to the dissolution of your dreams.

Thee Heart Tones

Thee Heart Tones are Jazmine on vocals, Ricky on keys and organ, Jorge on drums, Jeffrey Romero on bass, Peter Chagolla on lead guitar, and Walter Morales on rhythm guitar. They’re all precociously young: Jorge is the eldest at 21 (“the old man of the band,” Ricky jokes,) Jazmine the youngest at 19, and the others are all 20. Ricky met Jorge, Peter, Walter, and Jeff at Hawthorne High School.

Thee Heart Tones debut album Forever & Ever is a testament to their unmistakable chemistry and  talent that are both far beyond their years.  Choosing to cover “Sabor A Mi”, a 1950s bolero by Mexican musician Alvaro Carrillo also shows a sophistication in their intention rarely found in kids their age.

“It allows us to let our audience know we go back to our roots,” Jazmine says. “Growing up in LA, you get influenced by the city, the artwork, the music,” Ricky says. “Dad didn’t own a lowrider car, but other members of our family did. Impalas. El Caminos. I was influenced by the culture, particularly the Chicano culture. And oldies and soul music played a big part.” The style. The culture. The nod to the past. “That’s what we’re going for. We want to connect young Chicanos with their heritage. And we want to unite people — old and young.”

2:30 PM - Soulfunky of Groovewell

3:00 PM - Anthony Mansfield

4:00 pm - DJ M3

5:00 pm - Justin Martin

Meet the Artists:

Justin Martin

“I’m always trying to find music for my DJ sets that rattles sound systems, but still has enough melody and interesting texture to expand your mind even if you’re sitting at home on a snowy or rainy day.”

To everyone curious about what’s to come, “expect music with emotional depth combined with raw dancefloor grit.”

As the late Oscar Wilde once said: “life is too important to be taken seriously”, an ethos that Justin Martin is sticking with despite achieving soaring success over the last six years as a producer and international DJ. Justin initially pricked the ears of the electronic music community in 2003 with his first record ‘The Sad Piano’ on Ben Watt’s Buzzin’ Fly label.

Feeding off the energy of the San Francisco underground, Justin was intrinsically involved with the development of Dirtybird records, appearing on its first four releases.

Justin was soon ready to take flight, releasing a string of solo EPs that flaunted a unique sound and garnered further respect among fellow DJs and heavyweights of the scene.

Music journalists typically describe Justin’s sound as ‘melodic and tough’ with his music encapsulating both melody and emotional depth yet always with enough undeniable ass-shaking properties to translate to the floor.

1pm - Lost Puppy Forever

1:30 - Dog costume contest, MCed by Lost Puppy Forever, prizes offered)

2:15 - Nobody's Baby

3:00 - The McCharmlys

4:00 - Die Spitz

Meet the Artists:

Die Spitz

Die Spitz is a mayhem-inciting force founded in January 2022. The quartet (Ava Schrobilgen, Chloe Andrews, Ellie Livingston, and Kate Halter) is known for their unruly stage presence, bombarding their crowds with a wall of sound. Die Spitz continues to penetrate the music scene with unparalleled momentum, sharing stages with heavy hitters Amyl and the Sniffers, L7, and OFF!. These childhood friends turned musicians have recently premiered a double EP on vinyl, The Revenge of Evangeline and Teeth, capturing this live energy. As Lee Ackerley of Austin Monthly put it: “youthful moxie has never sounded so good”.

The McCharmlys

THE MCCHARMLYS are a five-piece combo from Santa Ana, Calif., currently taking the scene by storm with their stylish blend of doo-wop, surf, beat & 60s style rock ‘n’ roll. LA Weekly called the band “an absolute joy” as they “recall sounds from past while adding a contemporary edge that is attractive to punk, new wave and rockabilly fans.”

Nobody's Baby

Nobody’s Baby is a band that set out to make midcentury realism with a psychedelic nightmare backdrop. Everything is from scratch - from recording/producing to building their own guitar amps. Atmospheres of sludgy fuzz to tight harmonies. Wonder to hysteria. Mood swings and dead boyfriends. Blackout drunk Screamin Jay Hawkins. Buddy Holly post plane crash. But there’s no hero worship to be found here. The quartet write a letter to their musical idols. The note is written in vintage fuzz pedals, trashcan reverb and pounding cave dweller drums. The result is a death doowop funeral parade and everyones invited.

4:20pm - 4:50pm - Slumped

5:15 pm - 6:00pm - Scowl

Meet The Artists:

Scowl

Scowl is Kat Moss (vocals), Malachi Greene (guitar), Bailey Lupo (bass), Cole Gilbert (drums), and Mikey Bifolco (guitar). Scowl has quickly made a name for themselves as one of the most vivid and hard-working acts in the rock world. Since the release of their debut album, How Flowers Grow in late 2021, the band has become a powerful force to be reckoned with. Lauded for its reality-driven, aggressive blend of hardcore punk, the critically acclaimed album opened new doors for the band, including a non-stop touring schedule. As new music began to take shape, it was no surprise that experiencing most of their lives on the road would greatly influence the next phase of Scowl. Enter Psychic Dance Routine.

Slumped

California’s Slumped is an alternative rock band formed in 2017 as part of the burgeoning indie scene of the East Bay Area. Informed as much by the tone and engaging songwriting of bands like Third Eye Blind and Everclear as they are by more contemporary acts like Superheaven and Tony Molina, Slumped plays rock music – full stop. Driven by screaming refrigerator guitar amps and distortion pedals, thundering drums, and roaring bass, the band’s “heavy pop songs” sound like they’re 100 stories tall, both on and off record. Existing somewhere between Weezer’s Pinkerton and Thin Lizzy’s Black Rose, Slumped is the perfect soundtrack for driving very fast into the sunset while bawling your eyes out.

NHI

NHI (Natural Human Instinct) is a hardcore punk band out of San Jose, California

Schedule

Gates Open - 1PM

The Candy Whips - 1:30PM

To Be Announced Supporting Act - 2:30 PM

Eagles of Death Metal - 4:30 PM

Eagles of Death Metal is an American rock band from Palm Desert, California, founded in 1998 by best friends Jesse Hughes and Joshua Homme. The group has included a wide range of other musicians that appear on the band’s studio albums and live shows. EODM’s current touring lineup includes the ever-present Hughes, Jennie Vee on bass, Jorma Vik on drums, and Joshua Jove on guitar.

Despite their band name, Eagles of Death Metal is not a death metal band and is intended to be humorous. With a sound that's a combination of “bluegrass slide guitar mixed with stripper drum beats and Canned Heat vocals," and a frontman in Hughes who is known for his over-the-top stage histrionics and evangelistic interaction with his fans, the band’s live performances are a sight to be seen.

EODM has released four studio albums to date -- Peace Love Death Metal, Death By Sexy, Heart On, and Zipper Down -- and has toured the world extensively over the past two decades. A brand new studio album is in the works for a worldwide release in 2023.

EODM first appeared on Homme's The Desert Sessions Volumes 3 & 4, released in 1998. Over the next few years, Homme experienced huge success with QOTSA but returned to EODM in 2004 to release their debut Peace Love Death Metal in March 2004. Songs like “I Only Want You” and “Miss Alissa,” from the album were used in TV commercials and the album became a source for film, video game and movie trailers.

The band followed up their debut with Death By Sexy in 2006, and Heart On in 2008. After years of touring the US, Europe and the rest of the world, the band went back to the studio and started work on Zipper Down. That album eventually saw the light of day in fall 2015

While the band was on stage at the Bataclan in Paris, on Nov. 13, 2015, terrorists stormed the venue and attacked the audience. Only 3 weeks later, the band returned to the stage with U2 in Paris in their first concert appearance since the attack. The bands performed a cover of Patti Smith's "People Have the Power" together before EODM performed "I Love You All the Time." In a statement following the performance, Hughes thanked U2 and said that the band would return to Paris in February 2016 to finish their interrupted show. In December 2015, the band announced the full resumption of their European tour, which they had renamed the "Nos Amis Tour" ("Our Friends Tour"). The tour included a date at the Olympia in Paris on Feb.16. Ticket holders from the November show at the Bataclan were invited to attend the Paris concert for free.

A documentary directed by Colin Hanks about the band and the aftermath of the Bataclan attack, titled Eagles of Death Metal: Nos Amis (Our Friends), premiered on HBO in early 2017. The following year, EODM scored the movie Super Troopers 2.

Eagles of Death Metal Present Boots Electric Performing The Best Songs We Never Wrote was released in June of 2019, featuring 13 covers of songs that have inspired Hughes over the years. The band completed a sold-out headline tour of Europe following the album’s release.

About the Artists

Alpha Rhythm Kings

Established in 2017, the Alpha Rhythm Kings have created quite a stir with music fans, having crafted an exciting, King Size California sound, with what roots music magazine No Depression calls "the badge of authenticity".

The “swaggering” (The Washington Post) ensemble, led by Robert Dehlinger's “exhilarating” trumpet and "magnetic" singing (Jazz Corner) are a favorite with audiences in nightclubs, festivals and concert halls.

The A.R.K.'s high-energy vintage vibe has whisked them all over the globe, from the Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills, to performances in Hungary, Austria, Germany, and back to the USA to play at the Grammy Awards Nominee San Francisco Chapter Celebration.

You may catch the band entertaining at top jazz venues (Yoshi’s in Oakland, Herb Alpert’s Vibrato Grill, Blue Note Napa), nightclubs (Feinstein’s at the Nikko, 54 Below in Manhattan), exclusive private spots (the French Club, University Club of San Francisco), swanky casinos (the Peppermill in Reno, Nevada, Agua Caliente in Palm Springs, the Orleans and Fontainebleau in Las Vegas), top class hotels (the Hay-Adams in Washington, D.C.), large street fairs (San Francisco’s North Beach Festival), and family-friendly theme parks (Disneyland Resort, California’s Great America)

Frontman Robert has entertained crowds at many of the USA's most famous locales, including shows at Lincoln Center's Midsummer Night's Swing in Manhattan, George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch, Pixar Animation Studios, and Disneyland Park in Anaheim, CA.

Nick Rossi Swing Six

Nick Rossi is known both locally and internationally as a premiere swing dance bandleader, having performed throughout the United States and Europe with his Swing Four/Six, a hard-driving combo imbued with the spirit of the classic Old Testament Count Basie combos. In the autumn of 2023 he debuted his Jazzopaters, one of the few ensembles anywhere dedicated to the “small group” repertoire of the maestro Duke Ellington, spotlighting a diverse group of talented musicians.

About SF Live:

SF Live is a six-month series of free, outdoor music concerts put on as a joint, citywide initiative by esteemed San Francisco arts & music producers Illuminate, San Francisco Parks Alliance, Noise Pop Productions, and Union Square Alliance. Created as a love letter to San Francisco music, SF Live concerts are a coming together of San Francisco’s storied musical history and the city’s promising and developing local talent.

This show is produced in partnership by Illuminate and El Rio.

Schedule:

2PM - Doors Open

2PM - Sets by DJ Brown Amy

Drag Performances by Dulce De Leche & Per Sia

3PM - Peña

PEÑA - bilingual bedroom-bossa brainchild of a chilean-american first gen only child.
Surf and turf, jazz-gaze stir fry for emotional souls who appreciate pop equations.
NJ to the bay.

4PM - Healing Gems

Healing Gems are an unconventional and offbeat bunch. Within the dynamics of this 6 piece group, it’s difficult to pinpoint where their sounds begin as they glide and sway from genre to genre. They reimagine music spanning from overlooked exotica, lounge, international jazz, soundchips of old video games, and kitschy cinematic soundtracks; creating their own melting pot of sound. Healing Gems are a peculiar and curious melody that creates nostalgic landscapes for drifters and dreamers alike. Grab a drink and enjoy the trip.

5PM - San Cha

By subverting the tropes of popular culture from her Mexican roots to create a sound that’s uniquely hers, SAN CHA continues to make an impact on the music world. She channels a wave of cultures to beautifully collide in a mix of genres. As eclectic in sound as she is in emotion and storytelling – she’s at times haunting and full of ache but quickly thereafter an unstoppable dance force. San Cha will premiere ASUNCIÓN, a new telenovela opera based on her concept album “La Luz de la Esperanza” (2019) as part of Long Beach Opera’s programming for the summer of 2024. In 2023 San Cha released a series of singles called “Processions” that transcended the sounds of Rancheras, electronic and dance – these will be re-released as a cassette in partnership with Ballroom Marfa in late 2024. Additionally, in 2023, she released two music videos for her singles “White Magic” and “Deja Que el Mundo se Prenda.”

Before this, San Cha first put out demos under the title “Me Demandó” in 2016, followed by her EP, “Capricho del Diablo.” During this time Red Bull took notice and invited her to perform and kickoff the 2019 edition of Red Bull Music Festival Los Angeles where she presented an original stage performance called “La Luz De La Esperanza.” Following the Red Bull Music Festival, San Cha released the album, “La Luz de la Esperanza” to critical acclaim – Pitchfork called it awork of art that took her entire life to make, the synthesis of years of struggle and growth, a style forged on the ranches of Jalisco and in the queer clubs of San Francisco.”

The Advocate named San Cha one of 2020’s Women Of The Year and said “La Luz De La Esperanza,” “celebrates the musician’s journey from cultural oppression and domestic violence to a flourishing freedom as a queer woman of color.” San Cha has also been featured in SPIN Magazine, LA Times, Them, Remezcla, I-D Magazine, Paper Magazine, and Dazed. She has performed at prestigious venues such as The Music Center, The Getty, The Ford Theater, Hauser & Wirth, Vibiana Cathedral, among others.

Meet the Artists:

Supporting: Kossisko

Kossisko is an innovative musical artist, actor and composer. The gender-fluid artist has appeared in HBO’s wildly successful Euphoria, and portrayed themself in two seasons of Netflix’s Sex/Life. Kossisko’s music had been lauded publications like NYLON, Fader, SPIN, Vulture, VICE and Pitchfork to name a few. With a passion for using their creativity to encourage everyone to live authentically, the Grammy nominated songwriter believes this is the best gift one can give to the planet and themselves.

Supporting: Lalin St. Juste

Lalin St. Juste's roots meet at the crossroads of the Western world. She dances as sounds slither in her mouth; painting the world with words birthed from a spirit veined with ancestral magic. Commonly described as "mesmerizing" and "hypnotizing" when she performs, St. Juste shifts the atmosphere with her voice, inviting you into her cosmic underworld. Lalin has always been drawn to sound as a vehicle for healing.. At the age of six, she learned to sing through grief - intuitively using her body and her voice as a channel to access dimensions beyond the physical world. Her musical evolution included taking risks to season herself as a singer-songwriter - she spent months donning the guitar to play on sidewalks and cafes. The payoff was inspiring and Lalin joined Haitian folklore group Rara Tou Limen and co-founded Bay Area’s melodic sweethearts, The Seshen, a genre-expansive six-piece band who has shared stages with Hiatus Kaiyote, Ledisi, Tank and the Bangas, and more. In 2021 Lalin will release her debut solo recordings on 7000COILS, a queer + black-owned indie record label she co-founded with KKINGBOO centering the African diasporic experience through the creation of intentional and innovative digital and live portals.

Sudan Archives

As Sudan Archives, Brittney Parks has combined left-field strains of R&B, hip-hop, and experimental electronic music with hypnotic string loops and the fiddling style of West Africa, as heard on her critically acclaimed album Natural Brown Prom Queen (2022).  The self-taught violinist, singer, songwriter, and producer started playing violin in her native Cincinnati, Ohio. After Parks moved to Los Angeles to study music technology, she started producing beats on a tablet computer with the addition of her vocals and strings, the latter increasingly inspired by immersion in Sudanese music. “A swaggering statement of intent with all the idiosyncratic charm that makes her music so memorable” – Pitchfork (Best New Album, 2022)

Schedule

1:00PM: Doors Open

2:00 PM: James Wavey

3:00 PM: Bolero!

BOLERO! Is a San Francisco based rock band that performs what can best be described as “FREAK-FLAG-MUSIC”. Inspired by the Bay Area bands of the late 60s and early 70s, The group produces a dynamic and rich range of compositions that ride the sharing borders of blues, jazz, soul, rock ‘n’ roll, folk, country funk, Latin and psychedelic music. They have shared the stage with such acts as Big Brother & The Holding Company, Johnny Echols & LOVE, Asteroid # 4, and Spindrift.

4:00 PM - 5:30 PM: WITCH (We Intend to Cause Havoc)

Witch was a Zamrock band formed in the 1970s. Widely seen as the most popular Zambian band of the 1970s, W.I.T.C.H (an acronym for "We Intend To Cause Havoc") were formed during Zambia's golden post-independence days, and were headed by lead vocalist Emanuel "Jagari" Chanda. With the economy collapsing in the late-1970s, and increasing government authoritarianism, Witch, like most Zamrock bands, were reduced to playing daytime shows to avoid the curfews, and faded away.

This prompted Jaggari to leave the band and pursue his career as a teacher. The Witch Band later recruited Patrick Chisembele and Christine Jackson as lead vocalists. This was the time the band switched from rock to disco music. After the departure of Patrick Chisembele and Christine Jackson, the witch further switched to the Zambian traditional music, Kalindula led by Chris Mbewe. Under this genre, they recorded hit tracks such as Janet, Nazingwa among others.

Twenty years in the making, Jazz Mafia is a prolific staple of the quintessential San Francisco sound, uniting creative and accomplished Bay Area instrumentalists, vocalists, MCs, composers, and arrangers.

The collective quickly garnered a reputation for its collaborative and risk-taking spirit, and over the years has worked with Roy Ayers, Lyrics Born, Zion-I, Rebelution, Latyrx, Galactic, Ledesi, Blackalicious, and Jackie Greene, to name a few. Recently, the collective performed sold out residencies at the SFJAZZ Center and served as the house band in The Soiled Dove – its large-scale cirque-inspired collaboration with The Vau de Vire Society. Jazz Mafia has also recently collaborated with the Oakland Symphony at Paramount Theatre of the Arts, as well as with GRAMMY-winning composer Mason Bates and his Mercury Soul project at the Kennedy Center in DC. Jazz Mafia also curates musical experiences for Stanford University, Oakland Art & Soul Festival, and many other presenters.
